We are proud to be recognized as a 2017 Social Design Circle Member by the Curry Stone Design Prize. The Curry Stone Design Prize has been running for 10 years and to celebrate, they are recognizing throughout the year all the practices that they believe are contributing substantially to the socially-engaged design movement worldwide.

In their words, “The Curry Stone Design Prize is awarded each year to honor innovative projects that use design to address pressing social justice issues. Supported by the Curry Stone Foundation, the Prize highlights and rewards projects that improve daily living conditions of people in communities around the world. Projects may provide shelter and clean water or address humanitarian crises impacted by environmental or climate change. The Prize acknowledges work that is considered emerging in the professional and public consciousness. This year, in honor of our 10th anniversary, we’ve assembled a group of 100 of the most compelling social design practitioners of the last decade. A project we’re calling The Social Design Circle. These are practices which have captivated and inspired us over the years, as we’ve built a global community of visionaries, activists and game changers. Each Circle member will receive an honorarium and an award, and as the year progresses, we’ll be highlighting their practices on our website.”

April honorees, including Communitere, fell under the theme “Can Design Prevent Disaster?” Read their piece about us on their website here.

To Bloch, too much of disaster response was based on pre-programmed solutions to unique crises. Rather than taking time to understand what made a community work before a disaster, and therefore what could make it work after a disaster, large international agencies would come in with a predefined set of objectives, tactics and goals.”
