Final Notes: Communitere’s Typhoon Ruby Response
Philippines Communitere has just wrapped up its humanitarian response in Eastern Samar, the area worst hit by typhoon Ruby (internationally known as “Hagupit”). The storm ravaged the Philippines at the end of 2014 causing over $100 million damage and completely destroying an estimated 18,000 homes and damaging 60,000 homes. Prior to making landfall, Typhoon Ruby was considered to be the worst threat to the Philippines in 2014. Fortunately, the disaster was significantly smaller than the devastation wrought by Typhoon Haiyan the preceding year.
Just after the storm, Philippines Communitere packed up our Pop-up Resource Center and headed to Dolores in Eastern Samar. There, we loaned thousands of tools to the affected communities in Eastern Samar; our 23 chainsaws were in especially high demand and were utilized to clear the debris caused by the havoc. As part of our stress moderating measures, we also hosted nightly public movie screenings which were attended by hundreds of people each night.
All of us at Philippines Communitere would like to thank the people of Eastern Samar for showing us the best of Filipino hospitality in the worst of times. We are very proud of the Certificates of Appreciation you awarded us!
